A really long video game meme!
1. What was the first video game you have ever played?
- Probably Burger Time or Q-Bert.
2. What was your first console?
- The Intellivision. With the voice synthesizer, yay! "Mattel Electronics presents: B-17 Baaam-er!"
3. Have you ever visited a video game arcade?
- Naturally. I miss the Zot Zone...
4. What was your first handheld?
- I'm not a handheld fan; I don't think I've ever actually owned one.
5. What was the first game you've beaten/cleared completely? (Got to the last level/got 100%/beat high score, etc.)
- I don't think anything for Intellivision had a "last level", nor did I keep track of scores for any of them, and I never did beat the original Mario Brothers... most likely my first finished game was the original Final Fantasy.
6. Games based off of real sports: Yay or Nay?
- Fun sometimes, but I don't enjoy them enough to run a full season. And I much prefer when they get a little unrealistic (NBA Jam, NFL Blitz). Juggling stats doesn't interest me.
7. Online games: Yay or nay?
- Sure. Especially at LAN parties.
8. Do you play any Massively Multiplayer Online RPG games? (MMORPGs?)
- A year ago, I would have given this a "no chance, ever," and then City of Heroes claimed my soul and I haven't been heard from since.
9. Do you play any virtual pet games? (Neopets, Teripets, Aftermathzone, etc.)
- Nope.
10. Puzzle games and Strategy games: Yay or Nay?
- Puzzle games are good for a quick distraction. Strategy is harder but more my style.
11. Do you play any RPGs?
- I'm a Square-Enix junkie, so yeah. Need to try some of the less publicized ones, though.
12. Do you play any Platformer games?
- Not so much, but I do enjoy me some Mario from time to time.
13. What was the first game/console/handheld of yours that stopped working?
- Old consoles don't die, they just fade away. At least at my house, where we've only owned four consoles (Intellivision, NES, SNES, Gamecube); the first three were eventually sold or given away to other people after it was clear there'd be no new games for them, and the Cube is still alive and well and giving me my Zelda fix.
Characters/Plot
14. Do you actually care if a game has a plot or do you just play games for the gameplay?
- I must admit I like a back-story, even a cheesy one (see most fighting games), but a really bad or unbelievable plot can be a turnoff more than no plot can.
15. Name a few video game characters that are your favorites.
- A few?!? Crap, alright: Celes and Sabin (FF6), Cid Highwind and Reeve (FF7), Quistis (FF8), Quina and Freya (FF9), Lucca and Frog (Chrono Trigger), Samus Aran (Metroid), King (KoF), Cammy and Dan Hibiki (SF), BB Hood (Darkstalkers... what?), Crow (Longest Journey), Minsc and Xan (Baldur's Gate), Morte and Fall-From-Grace (Planescape: Torment).
16. Name a few series that are your favorites.
- Final Fantasy, Soul Calibur, Zelda, Metroid... Thief and Baldur's Gate, if I can include PC games, and since you were asking about MMOs earlier, I'll assume I can.
17. Has a video game ever made you cry?
- I'll admit to tearing up in Majora's Mask, when the little girl in Ikana is reunited with her dad and tells him it was all just a bad dream. "Song of Healing" playing in the background really helped set the mood.
18. Has a video game character annoyed you so much that you wanted him removed from the game? If so, name the character.
- God, Squall, you are such an irritating emo kid. At least Cloud had the excuse of being totally messed up in the head thanks to Hojo.
19. Do you "pair" or "ship" characters up with one another? (make/create/write romance involving them)
- I haven't ficced in ages, so no, not really. I've occassionally thought "those two would make a cute couple" but never taken it further.
20. Do you write video game fanfiction?
- Only twice. One FF7, one FF5. I think both are still floating around the RPGamer archives. (And there's the boardfic, but somehow I doubt that counts.)
21. Do you draw video game fanart?
- Nothing beyond the random doodle.
22. Do you come up with theories on how a character came to be/what he or she would do in a situation/why he or she is moody/etc.
- Plenty of times. See my first fic attempt, as well as development of my characters in the insane little RP I indulge in.
23. Are you a "fanboy" or "fangirl" of any character?
- Mina Mina Mina Mina Mina Mina-- *tranq dart*
Boss Battles/Villains
24. Hardest Boss Battle
- Shinryuu, FF5. Dear god, he took me so many attempts, and I was cheating! (This being well before the PSX release, I was emulating the game, and after several failures I started making use of save states mid-battle.) Glad he was an optional, because putting him in as required would have driven me crazy.
Hardest required boss was Flaahgra in Metroid Prime, who kept smacking those damn mirrors back into position faster than I could knock them away. Given that he was the first real challenge of the game, and that he appeared early when you neither have a lot of extra missile/energy nor the advanced skills needed to use what you have effectively, he's enough to make a lot of gamers get loud.
25. Most Frustrating Boss Battle
- Ganondorf in Zelda: Ocarina of Time. Not because of plain difficulty, but because I could not for the life of me figure out what the trick to fighting him was. Especially since everything up to then had been "the light arrows are the key to defeating him" and then he'd just block them all. He wound up being the only boss in the game I had to check a walkthrough for.
If you prefer a "frustrating no matter how many times you fight him" boss: Gyorg in Majora's Mask: I could never get back up on the platform before he'd chow down on me. I was just glad to have two fairies in reserve, because otherwise I wouldn't have made it out of there.
26. Most Rewarding Boss Battle
- The Metroid Prime. Just the joy of smashing a final boss, combined with the worthy challenge that this one brought (and the ability to use just about every ability Samus had spent the entire game gathering). And the fact that it took a few tries, and is still a challenge even after two successes. Got half an urge to pull out the disc and send Samus in for a third round just writing about it.
27. Funnest Boss Battle
- Goht, Majora's Mask. More boss battles should be like racing games.
28. Most Boring Boss Battle
- Any fights in RPGs which seem to be "Oh, we haven't had a boss in a while! Let's have a random big monster show up for no reason!" An especially strong offender: the multiple fights, one after the next, while collecting the energy from the meteors in FF5. RPG battles can only keep me interested if I feel I have a reason to fight them or if they're a serious challenge for some reason; these were neither.
29. Boss Battle that dragged out for a long, long time
- I think I spent over an hour slugging it out with both Zeromus in FF4 and Kefka in FF6, but that may be the distortion of childhood memory. I know Meta-Ridley and Flaahgra in Metroid Prime both took ages.
30. Boss Battle with the coolest music
- All the best music comes from Squaresoft games, but I'd say the best of the best is "Awakening" (last battle of Xenogears). Honorable mentions to Zeromus (FF4), Gilgamesh (FF5), and Lavos (Chrono Trigger).
31. Most Surprising Boss Battle
- Not sure what you mean by this. If you mean "never expected to be fighting X of all things", Transcendant One in Planescape: Torment. If you mean "didn't expect a boss battle here", Ganon in Ocarina of Time. If you mean "didn't expect a development that occurred during/because of this battle", back to Transcendant One.
32. What's your all time favorite villain?
- Kefka in FF6. Manipulative bastard; evil, knows it, and enjoys it. And he WON, technically. Ganondorf in Ocarina gives him a close run for the same reasons, but Kefka is just more fun to watch in action.
33. What's your all time least favorite villain?
- Any RPG villain who didn't show his or her face until the last ten minutes of the game. See Zeromus (FF4), Ultimecia (FF8), Necron (FF9).
34. Do you ever feel sorry for the villains?
- Queen Zeal, Chrono Trigger. She was corrupted, but I think she had her kingdom's best interests in mind when she started her slide. I also remember feeling bad for the brothers in Myst; yeah, they'd done some pretty nasty stuff, but I wouldn't wish that fate on anyone.
35. Are there any villains that seem like they should be playing for the good guys, but aren't?
- Most villains that I think that about do switch sides sooner or later. Leo of FF6 is the only exception I can think of.
36. Most malicious villain
- Kefka wins this one too for obvious reasons. All other people are ants to him, and he's the kid with the (really big) magnifying glass. I think he would have wiped everyone out from the start but for the fact that it was more fun to mess with them instead.
Honarable mention to Irenicus in Baldur's Gate 2, who takes the opposite mood: slaughters hundreds and manipulates thousands in the name of research, yawns afterwards.
37. Most surprising villain
- Hmm, does Cait Sith count? He's surprising in a lot of ways -- identity, personality, just whose side he's on -- though I'm not sure if he ever counts as "villain."
Favorites
39. What's your favorite 3D game? (PS1/N64/Saturn generation)
- Ocarina of Time, hands down.
40. What's your favorite arcade game?
- Any Soul Calibur game.
41. What's your favorite next-gen game? (Gamecube/PS2/Dreamcast/X-Box)
- The Metroid Prime series.
42. Sequels/long series: Yay or nay?
- In principle, nothing wrong with them, especially if they were the plan all along. In practice, they can be a tacked-on attempt to milk more money out of a success. I've liked some; hated others.
43. What's your favorite Online Game?
- City of Heroes! But Battlefield 2 is a blast too, if I'm more in the mood just to unleash hell.
44. What's your favorite console?
- I'd give you a better answer if I'd owned more consoles, but right now I'm leaning toward the Gamecube. All the good points of the N64, none of the bad points, and it comes in a handy portable shape!
45. What's your favorite handheld?
- See my answer to #4.
46. Have you ever got yourself involved in a "console war"? (arguing that a console is better than another console)
- I was a Nintendo fanatic in my youth, before I had my crisis of faith (Final Fantasy 7... for the Playstation? but Final Fantasy good! but it's not on a Nintendo console... but...) I still enjoy Nintendo consoles more as a rule, but I'm not opposed to Sony and its offerings anymore.
47. Have you ever defended a character/game/console you liked in an argument? Which one?
- Thankfully, I never considered any of the above worth a massive argument about, else I might have embarrassed myself badly.
48. Name a game that you like but everyone else seems to hate.
- Why's everyone knocking FF9, anyway? Simple, to the point, good ability system, fun characters, contained everything I loved about the SNES era games.
49. Name a character that you like but everyone else seems to hate.
- I wouldn't say I like Cloud, but he's got a good backstory, including one of the biggest stunners in video game plots ever. Yuffie I do like, just 'cause she tries so hard (and has some cool-to-watch limit breaks). Also, Cait Sith admittedly can't fight but I just like the character concept and backstory.
50. Name a game that you hate but everyone else seems to like.
- I might give it a second chance when my Stack-O-Games is thinned out a little, but my first attempt at Metal Gear Solid ended early and abruptly because I couldn't get the hang of the controls.
51. Name a character that you hate but everyone else seems to love.
- It take a lot to make me hate a character; usually those that I hate are those everyone else hated earlier and with greater passion. I don't know; is there anyone out there that likes Gau? I don't.
Miscellaneous
52. Have you ever stopped before you finished a game because it was too frustrating to go on?
- Seventh Saga. Too many scenarios where you'd wind up between two zones... one where the challenge was just too hard for your current level, and the other where they were so easy you were getting barely any experience for it.
53. Will you stop at NOTHING to get 100% in a video game?
- I've gotten worse about that now that I have the resources (GameFAQs, etc.) to be painfully aware when I've missed stuff. My Triple Triad deck must be complete! Accursed Queen of Cards, you shall not defeat me!
54. Have you ever injured yourself at a video game? (Space Invader wrist and Mario Party 1 blister victims may answer yes)
- Nope, thankfully.
55. Has a horror/survival genre video game scared you to the point that you refused to finish the game? Did you get nightmares from said game?
- I never play those games in the first place; I'm too much of a wimp. Closest I ever came was trying out Seventh Guest for a bit.
56. Have you ever thrown a controller/disc/cartridge in a fit of frustration?
- Thankfully, no. I'm generally the type just to grumble and move on.
57. Do you need to blow/clean certain games to get them to play?
- I did that out of habit with all my cartridges, and if a disc won't play, my first instinct is to check for smudges to polish off.
58. Have you ever played a game for so long that you missed sleep over it?
- My connection crashed badly on the last mission of the Citadel Task Force in City of Heroes. The rest of the team gave me 15 minutes to return and then went on without me. I muttered curses at the web in general when I managed to reconnect well after they had all dispersed, then sold off my excess enhancements and prepared to log... and a broadcast went out recruting for another Citadel team. It was already past midnight; I didn't care. I viewed it as a sign from God. We finished just as the sun rose, and I crawled off to bed, thankful I had no work the next day.
59. Were you ever involved in the Pokemon craze?
- No.
60. Last but not least: Do you picture yourself playing video games 10, 20, or 30 years from now?
- Sure. Maybe not those that require good reaction times, but I'll probably always be an RPGer.
1. What was the first video game you have ever played?
- Probably Burger Time or Q-Bert.
2. What was your first console?
- The Intellivision. With the voice synthesizer, yay! "Mattel Electronics presents: B-17 Baaam-er!"
