I just wanted to be sure:
Dec. 4th, 2005 10:57 pm![[personal profile]](https://www.dreamwidth.org/img/silk/identity/user.png)
MySpace (as in, myspace.com) is a legitimate site, right?
I just received an email saying the MySpace account I had asked for was set up, and all I had to do was click on the link to confirm it. Had my password and everything. ...Except I didn't ask for an account. There's a second link, to a MySpace.com email address, that I should click on if I got the confirmation in error... but I'm just paranoid enough about emails like this not to click just yet. Besides, why would anyone sign up for an account with my email address if they knew they would need to verify it?
In case it helps you, err, help me figure out whether this is legit, I've included the entire email contents (minus a few identifying bits)

Date: 2005-12-05 05:42 pm (UTC)That particular email address has "Chris" in it. Doesn't take a l337 h4xx0r to work out that much of my name from there.

Date: 2005-12-05 02:40 pm (UTC)No mention of, "Please input your password" or "Please confirm your credit card number" or anything like that. It even had warnings not to do that.
What tipped me off to the phoniness of it was that while I do have a PayPal account, I don't have it under that email address. :p And I've used it from different IP addresses before, so I don't see how it could know what's me and what isn't by that alone. Also, there was no link at all to click. But otherwise, it looked completely legit.
I also had the same thing happen to me with Dominion, a game I used to play. I got a notification that someone tried to set up an account with my address, please click link to confirm, yada yada. All it prompted me to do is change my email password, just on the offchance that someone was using it from that way.
