I was mulling over the The Day After Tomorrow fic challenge and wondering if I could come up with something appropriate, but nothing was coming to me... until this morning, when this plotbunny smacked me upside the head and wouldn't shut up until I had finished typing the whole thing. Yes, I know [livejournal.com profile] annisj suggested this fandom herself, but given how (and when) the series ended, it was just too bloody perfect. Enjoy.

An Example

Illyria had been right. Gunn didn't even last eight minutes. Angel... he battled for three hours straight before some nightmarish creature with sharp teeth bit his head off and spat out dust.

At that point Spike realized two things. He was there because he wanted to fight by Angel's side, whether due to filial loyalty or common ground or owed debt. And he had no similar respect for Illyria. That's when he'd run for it. Lorne had the right idea all along, perhaps.

He had no idea what happened to the demon goddess after that; he never saw her again. She either chose to cover his retreat for her own incomprehensible reasons, or simply didn't notice he was gone and that she was suddenly bearing the full brunt of the horde herself. More likely the latter. But either way, she didn't follow, and only a few axe-wielding imps had managed to follow Spike. Dispatching them had been easy after all he'd been through.

It wasn't until a few hours later that he realized it didn't matter anyway. The heat they had been feeling wasn't just in the alley. The driving rain had subsided only to be replaced with high winds. And that had been days ago.

The reports were coming in from all over the globe: glaciers crushing Britain and Canada, tidal wave approaching New England, hail in the Orient. LA was experiencing its first tornado warning ever. Most people blamed global warming for the sudden climate change. Spike knew better.

"We do this, the Senior Partners will rain their full wrath. They'll make an example of us."

Angel hadn't realized how right he was. The Partners weren't just going to punish seven insolent wannabe-champions. They were going to make an example of this entire world. And only they knew when they would feel like quitting and starting the corruption cycle over with the remnants.

Bugger it all. He could live with his own death, so to speak. But he never would have agreed to this if he'd known he was taking half of civilization down with him.

Spike wished he could get to Italy and track down Buffy again, just to know if she was safe. He wished he could find Lorne, or even Illyria, just for some company as the world crashed down around him. But most of all, he wished Angel were still alive.

Then he could punch him in the nose.
