Okay, here's the idea if you haven't seen this before. I got these questions from [livejournal.com profile] matadin. If you want to get involved, you say so in a response to this post, and I respond with five questions for you. You then post the answers in your own journal.

1. What is currently your favorite webcomic to date? Why? Do you have a favorite character?

- Erg, so many to choose from. But probably College Roomies From Hell!!! The characters are all imperfect, hard to pin down as "good guys" or "bad guys" (a few clearly in the latter category, but none blatantly in the former anymore). They have their own agendas and their reasons for having them, and although they'll come together for each other when it really counts, by and large they'll gladly watch their supposed friends suffer over minor stuff or even major stuff if it advances their own interests. And I also love how, true to life, few of the storylines really end. As for favorite character... hmm, I identify heavily with Dave, but I happen to think that both Mike and Blue rock for their twisted scheming and the softness that they show around those they really care about. (For the reasons I've already mentioned, it's tough to cheer for any of them sometimes.)

I would be most remiss not to mention the first runner up, though, which only barely lost out: Fans!, the only webcomic to ever make me cry. Well worth shelling out for. My favorite there is definitely Rikk, who is a Christian geek. Finally someone acknowledges that we exists.

2. I like how you refer to yourself as "The Ronin Esper." Is there any particular reason why you call yourself that?

- It's a reference to my primary character on the RPGamer boards (depicted in my default icon here on LJ; thanks [livejournal.com profile] shadeykins!) ChocoMog ZERO (the name was originally a bit of a joke, before RPing on the board really took off) is a Final Fantasy esper (aeon, GF, summoned beast, whatever you want to call them) that rebelled against being summoned and fled his people. Ergo, a masterless esper.

3. What qualities in characters (in anime, games, movies, etc.) do you find the most intriguing (or endearing)? In other words, what kind of characters do you tend to like?

- This one took some thought. Here's a few things that I like in my characters. You'll have to live with the fact that they contradict each other; I do all the time.

Generally I'm fond of people who want to be heroes but find themselves in grey areas where they can't be as pure as they like to be. I've been really enjoying seeing Angel this season for that reason. Vash the Stampede also. And I guess Celes Chere falls into this one.

On the reverse, I like villains who are evil, know it, and don't care because being evil is so much fun. That's Richard III, Kefka Palazzo, and the like. I like pranksters for the same reasons: I firmly believe Fred and George Weasley rock the house. And there's those who try to be evil (or just indifferent) but can't help going soft-hearted on certain occasions. That covers the entire Green family (CRFH!!!, see above), Vlad Taltos (read Steven Brust already!), and Azumanga's Sakaki.

And then there's also my personal bias, which happens to like realistically depicted Christians -- that is, neither Bible-thumping hypocritical hate-mongers nor sinless practically-perfect-in-every-way innocents. Hence Rikk (again, mentioned above) as well as Wolfwood from Trigun. And though Reki and Rakka from Haibane Renmei aren't technically Christian, they go through such a religious experience that I've got to put them here anyway. I see these characters going through a crisis of faith or a moral dilemma, and I say "I've been there." Makes them more real to me. Even better when they merge with Category 1.

I'd say I also like unexpected complexity in my characters -- Reeve of FF7, Sam Gamgee, and most of the Planescape: Torment cast spring instantly to mind -- but that can be so hard to pull off that there are too many disastrous instances to name.

4. I've noticed that you were affiliated with the Boy Scouts. As someone who never (excluding being a Cub Scout for a bit) was involved with Boy Scouts, I'm curious-- what important life skills did that experience teach you?

- Finish what you start, for one. Even (especially!) when it looks like it would be easier to give up. I was in a similar organization called Awanas during elementary school, but bailed for what I consider now to be dumb reasons. When I encountered Scouting, I resolved not to do that again. Wound up forcing myself to Eagle less than three hours before my eighteenth birthday (the deadline), and I'm glad I didn't decide it was over at T-minus one month like I was tempted to. It's amazing how much you can accomplish in a short time when you're motivated and plan well. That's another thing I learned.

5. Finally, more of a fun question than anything. If you were a Summon in any of the Final Fantasy games, which one would you be?

- My RP character aside, I'd probably pick Odin. Always seemed the noble type, able to snuff our heroes in a moment but willing to wait it out and give them a chance. Plus he comes with trusty steed and really shiny blade. (And, for backup, a spear! All these espers, and so few bother with a backup plan!)

Referring to question two, I tried to do something similar with the title of my journal, but I don't think it was so successful. :P

And I'm tempted to ask for another interview, but I already got one from you the first time around.

Alright, I'll play.

I'll take a shot at this, if you're willing.

My turn, I guess.

Gimme your best shot.

(And I seriously need to catch up with Fans! sometime. From what I read of that comic, it rocked my socks.)
