There's some messed up code. Check lj_support (or the support page) when stuff like this happens - if there's weird bugs going down, it'll be mentioned there so support volunteers know what to tell people, and so people who are about to submit requests about it know without having to be told individually.

They probably should have mentioned it in lj_maintenance or news too... okay, yeah, they did in the first one.
