Is it possible for someone with a free account to change the "number of comments" and/or "leave a comment" phrase, etc.? If so, what's the easiest way to do it?

No, I'm not talking about me; I've paid, so I can do it the easy way. Also, yes, I'm aware of this, but I was hoping for something more simplistic... the guy in question isn't the most technically-minded.

Overrides are it for free users in S1...

Although I know that some S2 styles can be customized in the advanced customization section to use different text, I'm not sure if that option is available to free users.

I just checked, and no, it's not. (It's also the main reason I never bothered to switch my LJ over to an S2 style.)
