Comment on this post. I will choose seven interests from your profile and you will explain what they mean and why you are interested in them.

For [livejournal.com profile] westmarked, my answers:

Megahal

MegaHAL is -- well, was -- a program on the internet that would take conversational input and would reply with what it thought was a reasonable response given prior input. It was around in the previous millennium, so there's been much, MUCH "better" programs made since that actually could be mistaken for real people who aren't on dope, and as a result the live server isn't up anymore (though you can still download a personal copy to converse with). But the stream-of-consciousness conversations were always great for a laugh, and it was popular to post the results in one of the online communities I visited. An example:

MegaHAL: Why do people build things they know are going to be destroyed? Why do people build things?
User: That's a good question.
MegaHAL: Many times I've been asked this, and I never bothered to give anyone the answer.
User: Well? What's the answer?
MegaHAL: The answer is the ailmentary canal!
User: WOW! You're a genius!
MegaHAL: I'm not a dimwit! HOOHA!

Doug the Troll

Doug the Troll is a player on the Justice server of City of Heroes. I don't play on Justice, so I normally wouldn't know about him, but he also frequents the [livejournal.com profile] city_of_heroes community, where he's a bit of a celebrity. Know Ascendant? How he never breaks character, and is famed for his somewhat ridiculous persona? Same idea.

Doug am big green fellow who have too much Dyne in blood. Doug talk in Doug-speak: use third person all time, and am having trouble with verb tense and big words. Doug sometime have problem with stinky feet, but Doug friendly anyway! Doug likes wearing silly costumes! ([livejournal.com profile] cmzero not do Doug justice, am afraid, but you am getting idea? [livejournal.com profile] cmzero recommend you just click link at top and read.)

Yasunori Mitsuda

I consider Mitsuda possibly the best video game composer in existence (slugging it out with Sakimoto for the top spot), if not the most prolific. He composed Chrono Trigger and its sequel Chrono Cross, as well as Xenogears and the first Xenosaga, and Shadow Hearts. Chrono Cross is the only videogame soundtrack I've ever paid full price for (the rest were snagged from bargain bins). Chrono Trigger, though, is the one that originally astounded me: it's the same basic melody, re-arranged heavily in key, tempo, harmonies, and instruments into over 70 distinct songs.

I've

I've Sound is a techno/trance j-pop group that does a lot of soundtrack music for games and anime. Especially dating games and anime based on them. My first exposure to them was via the soundtrack to AIR -- specifically the opening song, Tori no Uta, which was such a beautiful and, I guess the best word would be therapeutic, song. Made me feel refreshed just listening to it. The other two songs I've found by them have had a similar effect (though not as extreme), so I thought the group as a whole deserved a mention.

Ergo Proxy

I haven't actually finished this series, but so far it's a sci-fi anime in a rather dystopian city that serves as the barrier against a disaster outside the walls. There's humans and androids, with the latter occasionally suffering from a virus that gives them some free will but also makes them unstable. And there's a few big super-androids running around, and there's Re-I (their spelling, not mine), who's an investigator trying to deal with the situation, and there's Vincent, who, well, I still don't know what his deal is several eps later, and I don't think he does either, but he's hunting for some big secret. Very noir, and confusing in places, but very well done in both mood and animation. And I love the opening theme.

Haibane Renmei

I don't have specific rankings for my favorite anime but Haibane would definitely be near the top if I sat down to think about it; there are only a couple series that might beat it out. I'm normally horribly cheap about these things, but in this case I plunked down 80 bucks for a 13 episode series that I already had downloaded. That should give you an idea of how worthy I found this show of my support.

The series is about the characters, the world, and the themes, which are all gorgeously presented in ways I can't really describe in words. You will grow to know these people and love them. It also wins major points for a strong ending, sometimes anime normally has a lot of trouble with (in this case, the subtle nature of the plot means that the ending doesn't feel like a whimper by comparison). A very artistic piece, to levels I don't normally see outside Miyazaki films.

Sakaki-san

Sakaki's a character in Azumanga Daioh, and my favorite. She's athletic and tall, but quiet, which everyone interprets as "too cool to interact with", but it's actually that she's socially shy. Once she links up with a small group of friends, she becomes their silent but noble defender, especially of the tiny Chiyo-chan, who's like a little sister to her. She also adores cute animals, especially cats, which is always a good reason to cheer for someone.

...and okay, she's hot. There, I said it. She's 18 at the end of the series; I claim innocence on this one.
