Question for all you icon-makers: is there a (free) way to rip a series of images out of a DVD for the purposes of making an animated gif? (Other than to take very precise individual screencaps.)

Failing that, a way to convert to MPEG or AVI? I can convert from there to image sequence.

What I've done is use a media player on my computer that can read DVDs (I think it was VLC or BSplayer that I used before) and go frame-by-frame.

Alternately, what I've used personally to convert DVD to AVI is SmartRipper - I'm not sure if it's the best utility out there, but it's worked for me.
